Rule #1 Take Care of Yourself for Fun Parenting

October 23, 2014 By Virginia

How to Have Fun Parenting

As parents, we either forget or we never knew how important it is to take care of ourselves in a loving and compassionate way with boundaries. In order to take care of others, we must take care of ourselves.  Like on an airplane, the stewardess tells parents to put the oxygen mask on first so that they can put the oxygen mask on their children.

One way of taking care of ourselves is to take care of our personal needs by not getting:

  • too hungry,
  • too angry,
  • too lonely,
  • too tired or
  • too stressed.

A good way to remember this is by using the acronym h.a.l.t.s.  The absence of any one of these needs can cause us to be easily frustrated and less likely to think straight or behave well in any situation.

Another way to take care of ourselves is to save our energy by;

  • not arguing with children,
  • guiding children to solve their own problems and
  • setting boundaries

When we use these Love and Logic skills, we model how to take care of ourselves and our children learn the importance of taking care of themselves.

Parenting can be hard!  Especially if the parent spends 12 or more hours a day with their children, they have a child with special needs or they have more than one child.  Having fun and building other important relationships is vital to your “h.a.l.t.s.” Finding and keeping at least one reliable babysitter is paramount to having the freedom to cultivate other interests.

I am here to support you in making parenting fun.

Learning vs. Rebelling

June 15, 2014 By Virginia

How to Turn a Mistake into a Learning Experience

“Every childhood mistake handled well can become a learning experience. Every childhood mistake handled poorly can become the source of resentment.” Dr. Foster Cline

Imagine that you are a ten year old boy and you did a poor job sweeping up the kitchen. Your father comes in and inspects your chore. His response is: “Aw buddy, looks like there is still some dirt on this floor. Would you like me to show you how I get the floor clean or would you like to try again by yourself?”

What do you think your attitude toward helping out around the house will be? Are you upset with your dad? Would you be willing to learn how to do the job more efficiently?

What if your father came in and grabbed the broom and began to angrily use the broom to clean the floor while saying: “How many times do I have to show you how to sweep the floor? You are so stupid, you can’t even sweep a floor! You can’t do anything right!”

What is your attitude now around doing chores? Do you get this reaction often? How many more times does this need to happen before you start to rebel against any request for help around the house? Who will you blame the next time your work is not up to par?

If you have fun teaching children chores and are empathetic when your children don’t get it right, they will be more willing to do them properly.

Have a fantastically, fun Father’s Day!

"I am so thankful that I met Virginia and have had her for a (Love and Logic) coach. The seminars are good but they cannot cover everything. That is why it is critical to have a coach to help you when unexpected things come up. Otherwise you are left in the dark wondering “What do I do with this situation?”" Beverley

"I took the Love and Logic course when my son was 18 months so that I could learn how to work with his biting and pushing and how I could better handle stressful situations. Virginia taught me through Love and Logic how to address  my son to get more successful  outcomes.   This a very effective class and I highly recommend  it for parents  of young  kiddos and older. In the class the parents  with teenagers said that their  new Love and Logic practice helped them significantly  communicate with their child by giving them the options to make choices for themselves  and for them to learn  what's right and wrong on their own terms.  I learned to calm down and tweek my approach when talking to him. Finally, he doesn't  bite and we have a much better relationship."

"Miss Virginia is an excellent teacher. In the class, she encouraged parents to discuss among themselves and come up with solutions. She also gave extra time after class to make sure we understand the ideas. I started putting those suggestions into practice. Since I am not owning my kids day-to-day problems anymore, my stress level came down significantly."

Thanks so much. It's been wonderful. The format of the class was exactly what I needed. The book is good as a reference, but the group dynamics, discussion and your lesson plan were what really made it "actionable".
